Foodie Award: The Best Donuts in NYC, if not the world
Lemon Poppyseed - This has been my favorite so far. The lightly tart lemon blends with the modestly sweet poppy seeds and glaze, and the whole thing just melts in your mouth. |
Sorry, foodies, you now have to come to Bed Stuy for one of your foodie adventures. This is because the best doughnuts in New York City are now here (though they like to call it Clinton Hill). The same people behind
Choice Market and Choice Greene finally opened their new donut shop where the old Roosters used to be. The wonderful Dough people know that only yeast donuts matter, so if you're a cake 'nut nut, you won't be taking up any of the maybe 6'x7' square feet of standing room in the shop. I can finally stop trekking out to Doughnut Plant for my foodie asshole doughnut needs.

Beautiful. I toasted it, and got the outside just slightly crunchy and the Nutella all melted. |
Dear god. And that was just the beginning. As I proceeded through the nearly religious experience of eating this, I couldn't keep the warm chocolatey ooze from dripping all over my mouth.
This is actually a much cleaner moment than most. |
The Blood Orange with Candied Orange Peel - Yes yes yes and yes. This is definitely one of, if not the, best. Get it.
Hibiscus - If you don't get your donut when it's fresh out of the oven, pop it in the toaster oven for a bit if you can. This was delicious (not to mention pretty). The dried hibiscus was tasty, though eating it on the doughnut distracts a bit from the soft, sweet, doughiness. The hibiscus glaze is where it's at though.

One morning, after eating a Dough donut and then napping, my foodie friend who has celiacs disease texted me: "fuck it. i'm doing Dough. and who better to get a lethal dose of food with me than you." Not sure whether to feel insulted or honored, back I went, and that crazy bitch ordered twelve donuts.
Dulce de leche with slivered almonds
This one was fine but not one I'd order again. The dulce de leche flavor didn't really come through. Then again, by the time we got to this one, we might have numbed our palates on sugar.
Toasted coconut - This one was delicious! Creaminess all over the soft, dense doughiness. Oh..mm..yeah...
Chipotle Chocolate Donut - I think they're now making the dough even better than they did before. It's perfect. On the other hand, I don't really care for the spicy chocolate thing here. Maybe the chocolate and donuty situation is too sweet a partner for the spice, maybe I'm just tired of spicey chocolate, maybe I was a bit hungover.
Chocolate with Cocoa Nibs - You know, I'm just not into the chocolate for some reason. I think it's because the chocolate's sweetness detracts from the dough's sweetness. The cocoa nibs themselves were nice, with totally recognizable earthy and fruity tones that I find cute, but chocolate just isn't my favorite accompaniment to this wondrous dough.
Salted Chocolate Caramel - I accidentally ordered another chocolate one because they tricked me with the salt, and it was hardly salty anyway. This confirms it though, no more chocolate ones. |
Plain glazed - The same day that I finally tried the plain glazed, a friend who apparently finally took my recommendation to try this place texted me saying, "Omg plain glazed omg."
That's a fine way to put it indeed. It just fucking melts in your mouth, this soft pillow of sweet doughy goodness.

I'm not sure I'd ever been to Dough at noon on a Saturday before today, but it was packed. Three guys were waiting outside of it for room to get it at all. I assume this is a direct cause of
Pete Well's recent NY Times article, which is possibly causally related to my blog. :] C'est possible!

Cheesecake with graham cracker crumbs
The NY Times didn't cover this new donut wonder! It is goooood. Cream cheesey goodness melting with the soft sweet dough.. oh my. I don't know much about the different cream cheese recipes used in various desserts, but there was something about this that seemed more like carrot cake cream cheesiness than cheesecake cream cheesiness, which totally worked for me!
I gave in to temptation the other day and went to Dough.
Passion Fruit with Cocoa Nibs |
My my my. Certain parts of my brain argue that it's even better than the lemon poppy seed. This may in part be due to the fact that the increased volume at the shop has led to fresher and fresher out of the oven doughnuts. The flavor was marvelous, and it just melts, melts I tell you! There was also a blood orange doughnut there yesterday. I can't wait.
Chocolate Explosion Holes (Wow, didn't think about how that sounds till just now) - Pretty good! 4 for $1. Though we (yet another friend and I) were hoping for something inside them, you know, that would explode into our mouths.
